STRATFORD Athletic Club’s English champion shot put ace Lewis Byng is competing for the British team at this week’s European Athletics U18 Championships in Gyor, Hungary (July 5-8).

The Great Britain and Northern Ireland team will have two athletes in the shot put after an impressive season from the U18 athletes. George Hyde and Byng are in the boys’ event after both set recent personal bests of 18.89m and 18.86m respectively.

Meanwhile, a record number of Stratford AC juniors have been selected for the Warwickshire schools squad at the English Schools’ Athletics Championships.

Twelve athletes (pictured) are in the squad covering nine different events, with more than a third of the Warwickshire team coming from Stratford.

Mathew Millward-Brookes has also been selected to compete in the long jump for Gloucestershire schools.

Four of these athletes – Imogen Sheppard, Adam Farrow, Millie Leighton and George Fox-Rowe – have been selected to compete for Warwickshire schools at the English Schools’ Athletics Combined Events Championships in September.

“The coaching team is incredibly proud of the selected athletes,” said SAC head coach Paul Bearman.

“After the really hard slog of training since September and competing since January, the coaching team will be fine-tuning the athletes over the next two weeks and then they’re good to go for the championships, which is the fourth biggest athletics competition in the world.”
