BEARS sealed revenge against the only side to beat them this season thanks to an impressive performance on Sunday.

From the tip-off Bears came out determinedly and, with Dan Gill in top form, took an early lead but a strong Steelers came fighting back to trail just 8-6 at the end of the first quarter.

The second quarter was also close as both defences impressed, although the hosts extended their lead to 19-14 by the midway point.

The third period was crucial as Bears’ Ben Haigh dominated the rebounding to help his side move into a 35-22 lead.

The advantage was increased marginally in the final quarter as the hosts secured an ultimately comfortable victory, much to the delight of head coach Tom Masterson.

“That was a good win against a very strong Steelers team who have a lot of good players in their team.

“Our defence was outstanding. To hold a team as good as Steelers to only 31 points shows that.”

BEARS 2nds gave a fine account of themselves against leaders Blackhawks who had beaten the Warwickshire side comfortably earlier in the season.

Bears coach Derek Hall said: “Whilst disappointed to lose, I’m happy with how well we played compared to the last game.

“I can definitely see improvements in the team and they did fantastically well seeing as we were missing some key players.”

ALTHOUGH they produced an extremely spirited performance, Bears 3rds were unable to keep a strong Steelers team at bay.

Bears coach Jacob Robinson said: “Despite the loss, the team has continued to show the determination and teamwork that we have seen time and time again in this league.

“It is also heartening to see new player Ellan Fraser grow and develop so rapidly in game scenarios. It’s hard not to be proud of them!”

Bears women’s team travel to Nottingham for the second round of the BWB Women’s League fixtures on February 10/11.

Bears are still looking for a sponsor and are always seeking to recruit new members, especially female and junior players. Email [email protected] or call 07946 518354.
