STRATFORD-upon-Avon Boat Club’s rowers excelled at the Ross Regatta – the traditional end-of-season event for the club.
Some 31 crews travelled to the regatta for two days of racing on the River Wye.
Low river levels meant a change to the traditional course meaning prior experience at the event was no longer an advantage.
Stratford’s masters pair Rebecca England and Lucy Scarlett raced on the 550m sprint course in the A/B double.
The pair made quick progress on Evesham, who benefitted from the staggered start.
However, Stratford powered through to take the lead and won by a comfortable four lengths.Stratford’s J13 and J14 squads also made their mark on the sprint regatta over a distance of 500m.
The club’s younger members chalked up several victories in the qualifying heats.
The J13 boys absorbed some technical lessons while the J14 boys rowed well but came up short against strong opposition in their respective finals.
Stratford’s girls stole the show as J13 rower Charlotte Franklin, J14 sculler Abi Dunn and the J14 double scull of Martina Bruce-Bonilla and Bethany Hammond all won their respective finals.
J13/J14 coach, Jon Francis said: “Ross is our traditional end to the summer regatta season and a great place for our athletes to shine.
“They all gave it everything they had and I’m delighted with the results.”
In the J15 event, Stratford duo Rory Rowan and Euan Richter suffered defeat in the double sculls final against a Ross combination.
Stratford’s J16 squad also competed in some senior events with five crews taking part in the senior double sculls competition.
The crew of Sophie Evans and Imogen North ultimately came out on top against a crew from Exeter in the final.
Stratford also triumphed in the J16 coxless quadruple scull final against rivals Evesham.
And J16 athlete Martha Baines rowed up in the senior women’s single sculls event as she narrowly missed out to an eventual finalist from Stourport.
In the J16 double sculls event, the combination of Maeve Dunn and Isla Dunn took on another all-Stratford pairing in the final.
And the Dunn combination pipped Poppy Warren and Bryony Francis to victory in a thrilling race to the line.
