Stratford and Alcester reach Junior Cup final

Stratford Editorial 11th Jul, 2018   0

STRATFORD A and Alcester B will contest the Wildmoor Spa League Junior Cup final after winning their semi-final play-off matches at Littletons Tennis Club.

The play-offs, sponsored by league president and Alcester man Tony King, also featured fellow pool winners Littletons A and Pershore in this 12 and under competition.

In the first round of matches, Alcester B pair Henry Beer and Oliver Linnett defeated Littletons’ Daniel Reynolds and William Bishop 6-3.

On the other court, Stratford A boys Oliver Murphy and James Richards just about overcame Pershore lads Thomas Edwards and Toby Atkin 7-6.

In round two Alcester B defeated Stratford A 6-3, while Pershore recovered from their earlier defeat to beat Littletons A 6-3.

Into the final round of matches, Alcester B looked favourites to qualify with four points up to that point. However, both Stratford and Pershore had everything to play for with two points apiece.

As it was, Alcester B maintained a 100 per cent record and took command to beat Pershore 6-0, while Stratford A comfortably qualified as runners-up by defeating Littletons A 6-3.

Losing pairs Littletons A and Pershore were presented with individual awards for winning their respective pools, while Alcester B and Stratford A go forward to play in a full match final alongside the men’s Inter-League Charity Cup final, to be played at Alcester Tennis Club on Sunday, September 2.

As current champions, this will be Stratford’s second appearance in the junior final, while Alcester’s only previous appearances in 2006 and 2017 saw them finish runners-up.
