STRATFORD & District Boxing Academy started off their season in spectacular style by securing their first champion of the season.

Kai Johansen fought in the semi-finals of the Warwickshire rounds of the ABA Development Championships at Burton against Richard Donnelly from Royal Leamington Spa ABC and Johansen won a convincing points victory to take him through to the finals on Sunday in Telford.

In the final Johansen was up against Nathan Pitt from Christ The King (Coventry) who has three stoppages to his name. Johansen approached the fight with his usual calmness and was not flustered by a flurry of big shots from Pitt, who was looking for the knockout punch.

Johansen boxed well at range and with speed and versatility he controlled the fight from start to finish, never deviating from the game plan. He was deservedly given the unanimous points victory to give him his first Warwickshire title.

Head coach Matt Pickering said: “This is the start of things to come. I am one happy coach right now. Kai was our first boxer to box under the new name and without a headguard.

“He also had to box twice in two days, he gets better and better with every fight. Personally for me, this is a great start to the season. Thank you Kai!”

Johansen now proceeds to the Midlands rounds of the Development Championships.
