Stratford's young riders show the way

STRATFORD Cycling Club’s last competitive time trial this year was the annual race up Saintbury Hill near Broadway.

This is a punishing climb at the best of times and to race up it in seven minutes, 13 seconds was an incredible feat for Keir Lewis, who was not only the youngest competitor but still racing as a youth rider.

Second home for the club was Johann Breytenbach some 33 seconds back followed by Tom Lane – a first year junior – another four seconds in arrears.

Most of the club’s regular senior time trialists competed, so the youngsters had some notable scalps!

In recognition of an excellent year’s racing, Lewis was selected as a member of the West Midlands youth team for the Prudential races in the City of London.

It was a ‘baptism of fire’ but he acquitted himself well and there are high hopes of seeing him in a Midlands team again next year.

Lane has had an exceptional year, mainly in road racing, and has finished as a second category rider for the 2015 season – a distinction not achieved by many while still competing as a junior.

He is the only current club member to hold a second category licence, meaning he will be competing at the highest level of junior racing next year while still being able to compete with seniors in other events.
